Improving nutrition and food security- community gardens.

School lunch cups With the rising global food prices, the village requires a means of becoming nutritionally self-sustaining. The school provides one meal per day to the children, but often this meal is not sufficient due to a lack of resources to provide balanced nutrition. We have set a goal to work with KVMOCC in establishing two community gardens that will provide a source of balanced nutrition for school lunches. One garden will be located in the school property and will not only provide food for the school, but will also act as a teaching tool for the children. The second will be located off of the school property and will provide staple grains. Both gardens will be run by the local people.

Achievements to date:
  • purchased and planted fruit trees around the perimeter of the Kibooba school property (many of which have since been stolen).
  • liaised with local property owners regarding the rental of land for the second garden.
  • identified a local resource, Uganda Rural Development Training Programme (URDT) in Kibale and arranged for a 10 day training with their agricultural experts. Training including modern organic agricultural techniques, business skill development and a two year plan for Kibooba village food security.
  • partnered with international non-governmental organization 4Oneworld (www.4oneworld.org) to provide ongoing support to attain the goal of food security. 4Oneworld provided the funding and logistics arrangements to allow for the URDT training and will assist Kibooba in implementation of the plan.
