Currently, orphans in Kibooba village are fostered in local homes. Research suggests that this arrangement is less costly and more supportive and developmentally appropriate than institutional care. However, there is also a demonstrated need to support the caregivers who must meet not only the children’s basic physical needs (food, clothing, health treatment, schooling) but developmental and social-emotional needs. We are working with the community to meet the following goals:- provide education and health support to caregivers and
- boost household income to support the foster families.
Achievements to date:
- provided malaria-preventing bed nets and education on malaria to all families affiliated with KVMOCC.
What remains to be done in the future:
- re-treat the bed-nets that were distributed in 2007.
- find a second and perhaps third income project to generate income for the local caregivers.
Options under investigation include:
- Developing a business for the local women’s co-operative, possibly handicrafts, solar lamps or some kind of cash crops.
- Starting a household level goat co-operative.
