Income generating projects for Kibooba village...

Baby chicks We are seeking to provide resources and support necessary to assist Kibooba to develop, implement and maintain successful income generating projects for the village. The goal is to create sustainable businesses that generate sufficient income to support the local school independently (without external financing) including paying for teachers and cooks monthly salaries and housing, and school supplies.

In order to meet this goal, we are working with the village to create a sustainable poultry business. The objectives are to:
  • have 1000 birds with 500 actively laying at any one time.
  • employ local persons to perform the daily operations of the business.
  • develop local expertise in the operations, management, and marketing of the business.

Achievements to date:
  • over the first two years, conducted significant research and spoke with several local and international experts in order to build capacity in the poultry business.
  • built and equipped a chicken house that has capacity to house over 1000 birds.
  • purchased over 1200 chicks/young birds over the first three years.
  • provided local Director KVMOCC with a computer and an accounting system.
  • made connections with a UK-Ugandan organization AMIGOS who have provided chicks/ birds, feeds, training and on-going consultative support.
  • hired two local workers, one male, one female, in addition to the local Director Joel, who now have regular income.
  • made connections with local and international veterinarian doctors and students to provide on-going advice and consultation.
  • arranged for a business consultation for the poultry operation and implemented recommendations.
  • completed modifications to the chicken house including increasing ventilation, raising the laying nests off the ground and making them multi-storied, improving the water delivery system, installing a medication delivery system, building secure storage space for feeds and eggs.
  • instituted strict infection control procedures including foot rinsing station, coverall and rubber boot outer wear for workers, isolation area for sick birds, vaccine schedule, etc.

What needs to be done in the future:
  • expand marketing and sales capacity in the local region to ensure reliable buyers for the eggs produced.
  • continue with monitoring.
  • Follow-up with other organizations to explore additional opportunities for income generating projects in the village.
